THE REFORM OF ECONOMICS: HOW THE COMPLEX SYSTEMS APPROACH IS BUILDING A REALISTIC AND HUMANE ALTERN

Abstract:

Mainstream economics (MSE) relies on simple, static models; it is foundationist, deducing its theories from ‘apriori’ data identified introspectively. However, economic systems are actually complex (with heterogeneous agents; qualitative/ ambiguous variables; nonlinear dynamics; uncertainty; and emergence); dynamic and static models lead to different conclusions; and professional/ cultural preconceptions contaminate apriori data. These defects produce dangerous inaccuracies in the MSE model of the world.
Sound, policy-relevant economics requires new tools. Two of these (fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms) admit more realistic specifications (heterogeneity, price exploration, etc) into the perfect-competition model (PCM), whose apparent justice and efficiency are shown to be artefacts of its own simplifications. Other mainstream models (e.g. international trade) rely on the properties of the PCM. All this invalidates claims for the virtues of laissez-faire.
Given the failure of the foundationist approach, the reform of economics requires a change in methodology towards the empirical sciences pattern.
In complex settings, actions precipitate reactions, vitiating short-term, competitive, individualistic strategies; hence, rational human behavior is a competitive/ collaborative hybrid. This invalidates the claim that the exclusive pursuit of personal agendas will always render the public sector inefficient. Nozick, Friedman, and Hayek claimed (different, incompatible) philosophical grounds for advocating a minimal state; these are also refuted.
Our hybrid nature contains drives (e.g., for autonomy, and achieving a sense of significance in one’s life) that are critical to our well-being, and therefore to the ethical question of what constitutes ‘a good life’. This implies some ethical constraints on the design of economic policy, and these are explored.

REBELLION IN PRINT: POLITICAL IDEAS AGAINST THE CURRENT

Author(s): TIBOR R. MACHAN (Chapman University)
Publisher: Addleton Academic Publishers, New York
ISBN: 978-1-935494-23-2
LCCN: 2011936841
Year: 2011
Pages: 236

Abstract:

There is altogether too much reliance on coercive force and its threat in human relations in most societies, including developed ones, and Machan’s objective in this book – which draws on many years of study in the field of political economy and theory – is to show that morally and practically the peaceful alternative within the classical liberal tradition is a superior one to all of the coercive polities in human history and around the globe. Machan reminds the reader that certain revolutionary ideas had come to be influential – for example, in the founding of America, via the principles of the Declaration – which drew a great deal of insight from such thinkers as John Locke. He explores the foundations of these insights, including the idea that there is a reasonably firm human nature, that human adults are moral agents and that this agency rest on the basic capacity to reason and to choose freely.
The implications of accommodating these insights are then examined and defended against skeptical doubts. A good deal of the work concentrates on what Machan, following former U. S. President Gerald Ford, calls the petty tyrannies of government regulation, a form of prior restraint that is unwarranted as public policy for free men and women and one that can be replaced with policies that avoid such unjust approaches. Throughout the book, titled Rebellion In Print, Political Ideas Against the Current, Machan established the standard for civilized political life of reliance on reason instead of coercive force, not because necessarily this will produce optimal living in society, which it will tend to do, but primarily because the morally significant life of human beings – wherein they can be at their best as human individuals in the company of others – requires it.

The Normative Defense of Free Market Capitalism:
Did the Free Market Cause the Financial Fiasco?

Author(s): TIBOR R. MACHAN (Chapman University)
Publisher: Addleton Academic Publishers, New York
ISBN: 978-1-935494-19-5
LCCN: 2011902492
Year: 2011
Pages: 126

Abstract:

Machan’s book advances an indispensable normative case for the free market
system of economy. He addresses the different approaches taken to showing
the superiority of the system to others and also discusses the charge that the
recent financial fiasco was caused by “market fundamentalism,” as the likes of
Paul Krugman keep claiming. This is a vital entry into the on-going debate
about whether the economic system based on the principles of freedom of
economic conduct, free exchange, private property rights, etc., is better than one
regimented from the top, either by some czar or a democratic assembly. Anyone
who is concerned with both the productivity and decency of an economic
system needs to address Machan’s arguments.

INTERNAL CONTROL AND INTERNAL AUDIT

Author(s): LUMINITA IONESCU (Spiru Haret University)
Publisher: Addleton Academic Publishers, New York
ISBN: 978-1-935494-11-9
LCCN: 2010915195
Year: 2010
Pages: 180

Abstract:

The author discusses some of the main positions in the debates about Madoff’s fraudulent financial scheme, his decades-long swindle, and the failure of operational risk management (the mechanism of the largest Ponzi scheme in history and its wide-felt impact on the global financial architecture). The main objective of this book is to explore and describe the role of financial globalization in the changing governance practices; effective corporate governance and financial market transparency; corporate governance effectiveness and quality of external audit; and director overlap, ethical financial reporting, and improvements in disclosure quality. The author is particularly interested in exploring patterns in the ethics of accounting; the societal impact of corporate risks; and the corporate governance causes of the international financial crisis. The theory that she seeks to elaborate here puts considerable emphasis on evaluating internal control deficiencies; identifying control deficiencies – an important component of management’s assessment; the political dynamics of corporate crime legislation; the imposition of criminal liability on corporate entities; and Internal Control Deficiency (ICD) disclosures prior to mandated internal control audits.

EQUALITY, SO BADLY MISUNDERSTOOD

Abstract:

The effort to make people equal in various important respects, e.g., wealth, health, education, burdens and advantages of all kinds, is the focus of criticism in this short work. I hold and argue that this effort is misguided, often very harmful and also frequently insidious, a guise for mischief by those who embark on the pursuit. The only valid form of equality pertains to people’s basic human individual rights—all who aren’t crucially incapacitated have these, so they are often called the equal rights of all persons. As regards politics and law this implies that no adult may be treated with special favor or disfavor by the legal authorities, whether in court or via public policy. Since the job of politics is to protect the equal rights of human individuals, everyone is equal under the law. But that’s the end of it, politically. Fairness is not a political good but one that has a role in various social contexts, such as family, teams, clubs, sport, beauty contests, and so forth. And fairness comes into play, other than in these areas, only when people voluntarily join some organization where they expect to be treated as all others who belong. Why so much fuss about equality and fairness? Some of the reasons have to do with the history of politics wherein kings and other rulers were expected to treat their subjects similarly, without favor to some of them and disfavor to others. And there is the tendency to extrapolate from family life, where parents are supposed to be fair to their children. Also, when teachers grade members of their classes, there is an implicit or explicit promise to do so unbiased, without special treatment of any (other than where justified, as when a student suffers from some impediment). But none of these imply or support the policies of egalitarianism. These and related topics comprise the content of this short volume and all egalitarians are invited to reflect on what is discussed here. In the tradition of classical political philosophy, this is not a technical, jargon-laden work, so any citizens can read it and gain food for thought.
